On Aug 15, the global leading organization on higher education intelligence, Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, officially released the 2024 Academic Ranking of World Universities. The ranking shows the top 1000 research universities globally. 203 universities from the Chinese mainland were listed, with 13 ranking among the world's top 100, an increase of three from the previous year. This year, 12 universities from Shaanxi province made it to the list, ranking sixth nationally in total number (following Jiangsu, Beijing, Guangdong, Shanghai, Shandong, and Zhejiang, also tied with Zhejiang).

According to the rankings, Tsinghua University is 22nd globally and first in Asia. Peking University is 24th, Zhejiang University 27th, and Shanghai Jiaotong University 38th. The University of Science and Technology of China (42nd) and Fudan University (50th) entered the global top 50 for the first time. Sun Yat-Sen University (72nd), Huazhong University of Science and Technology (79th), Nanjing University (82nd), Wuhan University (89th), Central South University (94th), Xi'an Jiaotong University (95th), and Sichuan University (98th) made into the global top 100. Twenty-one universities from the Chinese mainland, including Hubei University, the University of International Business and Economics, and Lanzhou University of Technology, made the list for the first time, indicating a sustained rise in Chinese universities' academic standards and international standing.

Among the universities in Shaanxi province, Xi'an Jiaotong University continued to rise in the ranking and entered the global top 100 for the first time. Northwestern Polytechnical University was close behind, moving up into the 101-150 band. Northwest A&F University, Northwest University (in Xi'an) and Xidian University were ranked among the world's top 500.

Other universities in Shaanxi on the list are Shaanxi Normal University, Xi'an University of Technology, Air Force Medical University, Chang'an University, Xi'an University of Science and Technology, Shaanxi University of Science and Technology, and Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology.
