By the end of this month, the highly anticipated Terminal 5 of Xi'an Xianyang International Airport will officially begin operations. Today, let's take a behind-the-scenes look at Terminal 5 and see what new experiences it will bring to travelers.
The massive T5 terminal, spanning an area of 700,000 square meters, gives a first impression of expansive views and grand, majestic ambiance. Under the transparent glass dome, clear and orderly signage blends the classical charm with a modern technological feel, collectively presenting a breathtaking "Chang'an Palace".
Currently, the staff of various systems are conducting final testing and adjustments, awaiting the passengers to have an in-depth experience. The departure hall of the terminal boasts 224 convertible check-in counters that can be used for both staffed and self-service, also set up with 112 international check-in counters with staff.
The T5 terminal has over twice the total area of the existing three terminals. It features a dual-level design for both departures and arrivals, allowing domestic and international departing passengers to use the same level without needing to transfer between floors. This design significantly enhances passenger comfort.
The T5 terminal building features 35 neo-classical aluminum structures that evoke a Tang dynasty ambiance. It is divided into three zones: a central exhibition space with a museum and tea culture display, and premium lounges in the north and south wings. This design blends the grandeur of an ancient palace with the vibrant atmosphere of a traditional marketplace, capturing the essence of Chang'an during the Tang Dynasty.
The museum within the T5 terminal is the world's first museum located within an airport, showcasing archaeological artifacts discovered during the various construction phases of Xi'an Xianyang International Airport.
The Phase 3 Expansion Project at Xi'an Xianyang International Airport is planned to meet the comprehensive needs of 2030, aiming for a passenger throughput of 83 million and a cargo throughput of 1 million tons. A significant part of this expansion project is the T5 terminal, which is currently the largest and most technologically advanced terminal among airport projects in Northwest China.
Following the completion of the expansion project, Xi'an Xianyang International Airport will feature two terminal areas, four runways, and four terminal buildings. It will be capable of accommodating nearly 600,000 aircraft takeoffs and landings each year, which translates to about 1,700 takeoffs and landings daily. This means, approximately every 40 seconds, a plane will arrive or depart at the airport.
