At Xi’an International Studies University (hereinafter referred to as XISU), a student team developed "Lingjing" AR smart glasses that bring cultural relics to life. These glasses can identify artifacts with remarkable speed, achieving a recognition accuracy of 98%. When worn, they provide instant access to basic information about the relics and display augmented reality animations.
"Lingjing" AR smart glasses provide real-time translation in 12 languages and over 20 languages from Belt and Road partner countries. The glasses are currently under pilot use at attractions in Xi'an such as the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda and the Terracotta Warriors. The student team behind "Lingjing" spans linguistics, artificial intelligence, financial management, and other disciplines.
"Many commercial AR glasses need specific environments for real-time translation, but our model targets professional domains," said Chen Hetian, team leader of the 2022 class. He highlighted that multilingual instant translation is the core technology of "Lingjing," developed through dedicated effort.
English consultant Hamoen, also the foreign faculty of the university, contributed significantly to research and testing, providing valuable user feedback. Collaborations with Peking University and Fudan University further supported the project.
Key hardware features include lightweight resin diffractive waveguide lenses and advanced processing capabilities provided by Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 chips. Additionally, partnerships with institutions such as the Shaanxi Archaeology Museum have facilitated the creation of a professional academic database, offering rich and authoritative resources.
"Lingjing" goes beyond translation by excelling in cross-cultural communication. The team created the "XISU Think Tank AI model," utilizing academic research to analyze cultural differences in clothing, food, housing, and transportation. This approach, combined with professional training, enhances accuracy and reduces AI hallucinations for effective cross-cultural solutions
Dang Yiwei, the team's advisor and a faculty member at XISU, noted that following China's 144-hour transit visa exemption, more foreign tourists are visiting China. He highlighted the challenges they face with language and cultural understanding, emphasizing the project's goal of enhancing their comprehension of Chinese culture and effectively sharing "China's stories."
