Lantian Simian Site is the national key cultural relics protection unit and AAA tourism scenic spot. Located in Gongwangling, Jiujianfang Town, Lantian County, Xi'an, relying on the excavation site of Lantian Simian site, the total area is about 13000 square meters, which is composed of three parts: site protected area, cultural relics exhibition area and comprehensive service area. At the same time, it is also Qinling Zhongnan Mountain World UNESCO Geopark Scenic spot, Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology & Paleoanthropology Lantian Workstation.

Lantian simian is the ancient root of Chinese nation. In 1963, the fossil skulls of Lantian simian has 1.15 million years history, were exposed. This discovery shocked China and world, praised as a major scientific discovery in the international archaeological circles in the 1960s. According to the international academic naming code, it was named "Homo erectus Lantian subspecies", abbreviated as "Lantian man". More than 50 Paleolith and more than 1200 animal fossils and Quaternary loess sections unearthed with fossils provide valuable physical data for the study of human evolutionary history, paleontology, paleoclimatology, paleogeology and Quaternary geological activities.

The exhibition hall of cultural relics is a concave building, which belongs to the architectural style of Ming and Qing dynasties. The exhibition hall was established in 1984 and opened in 1988.

At present, there are more than 100 cultural relics on display in the exhibition hall, including the fossils of the skull of Lantian simian, Fossils of human jaw in Chenjiawo, the paleolith, and more than 100 fossils, such as stratigraphy stone, which are older than the Paleolithic age. In addition, there are more than 30 kinds of animal fossils such as Lantian Sabre Wulf, horses, bison, namadicus, pig leopards... known as "the root of the Chinese nation and the soul of human beings."

Cenozoic stratigraphic section protection office

The loess section in the Cenozoic stratigraphic section protection hall is the origin of Lantian simian and Gongwangling fauna fossils. According to the division of the section strata by scientific researchers, 19 strata are divided from bottom to top. The ninth layer is light yellow silty sand, containing a large number of sporadic calcareous nodules. In some places, it is plate-shaped. 25 species of "gongwangling fauna" are found in the same layer with human fossils, with a thickness of 2.3 meters. This key protected section provides a strong proof for the study of "Homo erectus" and "Gongwangling fauna".
